Tomorrow I leave for an historic trip back to my hometown. Chicago's in the news alot lately. It lost the Olympic bid (I was there the weekend the IOC visited), 94 children have been murdered this year and there's a political scandal Du Jour. But this weekend, it's the location of several wonderful events for this former Chi-Towner. On Friday night my winter high school class is having an informal gathering in Evanston. I get to see the "girls and boys' of my youth. We studied together, laughed together, hung out, planned charity events and did our share of mischief. (Not I, of course).
The next night is the headliner: Mather High School Turns 50. No, it's not my 50th reunion but who could resist??? I may have been one of the first to sign up. That will be some venue "to work." I'm sure the school that seemed to be so very big at the time will be scaled to a realistic size. We lived in a close knit community in Chicago's North Side. We came from a number of feeder elementary schools but managed to blend. We had "clubs" but they weren't gangs. Drugs were not an issue. Most of us came from a 2 parent family and even lived near our grandparents. Do I sound nostalgic? I'm entitled. It will be wonderful to see my classmates, my community and the new wing of The Art Institute of which I am a member.
The next day starts the mini reunion of my sorority sisters with three of us flying across the country for a 2 night sleepover with lots of catching up, a number of "field trips", many stories and lots of laughter. And the food will be the comfort food of my youth. I will complain about the weight gain when I return to my California home and eating habits but it all will be well worth it. It will be a nostalgic trip down a windy memory lane. I can't wait for it all to begin!
