Whether it's a first job, a job change or a career transition, we need to plan a multi -dimensional job search. It's no longer smart to only click around on job boards, career job sites. Or to only go to networking events and career fairs. Or to only read the want ads in papers. We now must do ALL of the above. Why? Because "you never know".
The want ads may be only 20% of the market but if these positions are open, shouldn't you follow up on one that sounds like the right fit?
Business networking events are great places to meet people, work the room, and make the most of face to face opportunities. BUT, you still need to check industry job boards, Craigslist, company help wanted boards. And then FOLLOWUP with diligence, intelligence and fortitude.
Make sure your resume and cover letter are up to standard. A longtime pal told me that one of his client companies ONLY deals with resumes submitted to the site. HOWEVER, knowing someone at a company who can personally recommend you and pass along your resume to the right people, puts you in the catbird seat. Sounds retro? Yup! And it's still a door opener.
Don't listen to the people who tell you to "forget" job fairs, or networking events or reading the want ads no matter how "smart" their explanation is. It's your life, your career, your job and your job to get one! Whatever you have to do and all that it takes to do so.

Wow, Susan, Well said!!!!
Everyone or so it seems out there have an opinion re; work, job hunting techniques etc., But I say as you say; You never know!!!!thanks, Mark
